Mind Your Mind

by Ravikant Sangurde

We always say to each other that please mind your own business. So, what exactly

we mean by this? What is mind? And in which part of the body does mind exist? Let

us find out answers for these questions.

Is mind a part of our body? If yes, then what is the location of mind in our body.

Are brain and mind the same? Or is there any difference between them?

Being born as human being, we have so many questions which are unsolved in our life. So we will try to find out the answers for some of the important questions in our life.

Who are we?

This is the most important question in our life and we will first discuss this. Am I a body?If the answer is 'Yes', then what is difference between living body and dead body? Most of us are bewildered with such kind of questions and always fail to get proper answer due to modern style of living with so many gadgets such as smart telephone, smart television, smart car which ironically makes us totally fool. Advancement in science and technology just increases our level of comfort and pollution along with a lot many problems. Simple living and high thinking should be the mantra. Let us start with ourselves. Who are we? Am I a body? If I am a body, then why we always say that it is my hand, my legs, my stomach is paining or my body is paining, my face is beautiful etc. So if we are a body, then why do we say 'my' and not 'I'? Hence, It is clear from our own behavior that we are not this body, but something else which dwells in this body. According to Shastra or Vedic Scriptures, we all are a spirit soul that dwells in this body known as Chaitanya or Chetana.

According to Katha Upanisad 2.2.13

nityo'nityānāṃ cetanaścetanānāmeko bahūnāṃ yo vidadhāti kāmān |

tamātmasthaṃ ye'nupaśyanti dhīrāsteṣāṃ śāntiḥ śāśvatīnetareṣām || 13 ||

Eternal among the ephemeral, conscious among the conscious, who, being one, dispenses desired objects to many, the intelligent who see him seated in their selves, to them, eternal peace, not to others.

It means that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is alive in the heart of every living being and we all are eternally individual being who never get perished. So, the first proof of our identity is we are not a body but a soul which is eternal and never get perished.

What is soul?

Once we understand that we are not a body but a soul, then we need to understand what is this body made up of and how do we dwell in this body. Power of inquiry is the most important part of human life.

In Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7 Text 4, Lord Krishna says

bhūmir-āpo ’nalo vāyuḥ khaṁ mano buddhir eva cha

ahankāra itīyaṁ me bhinnā prakṛitir aṣhṭadhā

Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and ego—these are eight components of my material energy.

Material nature is called Prakriti i.e. nature and for creation of material world, Lord expands himself into three Visnus. The first one Maha-Visnu, creates the total material energy, known as mahat-tattva. The second Garbhodakasayi Visnu enter into all the universes to create diversities in each of them. The third, Ksirodakasayi Visnu is present in each atom. Anyone who knows these three Visnus can be liberated from material entanglement.

The material world is temporary manifestation of one of the energies of the Lord. The ingredients of the material manifestation are separated energies of the Lord. Above mentioned eight elements are the principle elements of material creation. Out of these, the first five manifestations namely earth, water, fire, air and sky are called the five gigantic creation or the gross creation, within which the five sense objects are included.

They are the manifestations of physical sound, touch, form, taste and smell. Material science comprises these ten items and nothing more.

The false ego- 'I, Am, Mine' constitutes the basic principle of material existence including ten sense organs for material activities. Intelligence refers to the total material creation, called mahat-tattva. From these eight separated energies of the Lord manifested twenty-four elements of the material world. Living entities are the superior energy of the Lord. The material manifestation is inferior energy of the Lord.

24 elements include

  • 5 gross elements: earth, water, fire, air, and sky

  • 3 subtle elements: mind, intelligence and false ego

  • 5 senses: eyes, ears, tongue, nose and skin

  • 5 working senses: voice, legs, hands, anus and genitals

  • 5 objects of the senses: smell, taste, form, touch and sound

  • and Mind

And the aggregate of these twenty-four elements are known as activity. Human body is the combination of these twenty-four elements, which undergoes six types of changes namely birth, grow, stay, produces by-product and dwindle. It not permanent but the spark within these twenty-four elements is eternal and known as Soul (ksetra-jna); the knower of the field, its proprietor.
